Celebrate Earth Day With The Paramus Environmental Commission At The Paramus Public Library April 23rd at 12-3pm, Rain Or Shine
The Paramus Environmental Commission, in association with the PHS Green Team, is hosting its annual Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 23rd, from 12pm-3pm at the Band Shell at the newly re-opened Paramus Public Library on Century Road. Rain or shine. Admission is free.

Special Earth Day Meeting of the Environmental Commission

On March 28, 2017, a Special Meeting of the Environmental Commission will be held at 7pm. This meeting is to discuss the Earth Day event taking place on Sunday, April 23, 2017. Meeting will take place in the Borough Hall caucus room.

2016 Earth Day Celebration Schedule, Entertainment, Exhibitors, Food and Fun!
Our 2016 Earth Day Celebration takes place Sunday, April 24 at the Band Shell at Paramus Library. Admission is free and the whole family is welcome! Free giveaways include reusable bags, water bottles, raffle prizes, and milk weed seeds, while supplies last. Music by Paramus High School Music Dept. and DJ Sawn Herrick. National Anthem sung by the award-winning L.Cyre' and face painting by Artistic Giraffe. Lots of great food and exhibitors!

Bergen County's Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program for our low-income seniors is offering $20 coupons to buy New Jersey produce at local farmers markets in the month of July. They will be at the Paramus Farmers Market in Petruska Park on Wednesday, July 15. If you know of any qualified seniors, please pass along this information so they can participate.

Paramus Environmental Commission Founder Passes Away
George Robert Schevon had a passion for protecting the environment with an emphasis on wetlands conservation. In 1973, he was appointed by Mayor Charles E. Reid to form the Paramus Environmental Commission, where he served for 6 years. During his tenure, George successfully fought to protect the town's last remaining wetlands and established one of the first municipal recycling programs.

Congratulations Sujene Kang, Winner of the 2015 Paramus Schools Recycling Bag Contest
The Paramus Environmental Commission has established an annual initiative in town to reduce the amount of disposable plastic bags used by consumers.

Students from the Paramus school district were invited participate in a contest to draw a picture to be placed on a reusable shopping bag. The picture design will be related to environmental protection and the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The winning entry this year was submitted by Sujene Kang.

Join the Coalition to Ban Unsafe Oil Trains at a rally this Saturday, March 7th in Bergen County. Because of the oil boom in the Bakken Region of North Dakota, up to thirty CSX trains carrying toxic and highly volatile crude oil passed through areas of Bergen County every week. These trains, which are up to 100 cars long, pass over the Oradell Reservoir, a source of drinking water for 750,000 people! These trains are passing through communities putting people, property, and the environment at risk!

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection: Christie Administration Encourages Residents to Remove Standing Water on Property to Reduce Mosquito Population
To prevent mosquitoes this summer, the Departments of Health and Environmental Protection are asking homeowners, businesses and contractors working on rebuilding to drain sources of standing water outdoors and routinely check property for containers collecting water where mosquitoes can breed.

Paramus Named A Sustainable New Jersey Municipality
Early Tuesday afternoon, Sustainable New Jersey announced that Paramus was one of 10 municipalities that had received their 2013 certification. The borough's certification is good for the next three years.
The program is voluntary, but achieving certification is not easy. Each Sustainable New Jersey municipality that is certified at the bronze-level must submit documentation to show it has completed a balance of the program's sustainability actions, meeting a minimum of 150 points.
Paramus' Green Team members were required to select 10-12 actions from a potential list of over 117 actions that include areas such as a commitment to environmental stewardship, community gardens, supporting local businesses, conservation of energy and water and waste reduction and recycling.
Paramus Environmental Commission Scholarship Application
Scholarships apply to Paramus residents only. Deadline to submit application is April 15, 2013.
Paramus Schools Recycling Bag Contest
The Paramus Environmental Commission has contacted Paramus schools to participate in a "recycling bag contest". Each school will submit three pictures on the environment to the Commission. The winning picture will appear on recycling bags that we will distribute on Earth Day.

Borough Fire Wood Give Away
In conjunction with the Paramus D.P.W. Department and the Environmental Commission, the September 24 borough fire wood give away was a success. D.P.W. supplied six thirty-yard containers of wood and in less than two hours over 95 residents came for fire wood.

Bats may be frightening to some, but they are harmless and have a huge appetite for mosquitoes. A single bat can consume almost a half a pound of bugs in a season. One way to encourage these little mammals to inhabit our yards is by putting up a bat nesting box.

Scott Gunther of Wild Birds Unlimited joined us in displaying bat houses, literature and information on Commission projects.

Smoking Prohibited In Paramus Parks, Playgrounds And Recreational Facilities
The Paramus Board of Health has adopted an ordinance prohibiting smoking in Borough parks, playgrounds, public swimming facilities and recreational areas, according to Borough Health Officer John Hopper. The Health Officer advised that the passage of this ordinance will reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and will prevent children from observing and emulating adult behavior which is hazardous to health.

New Electronic Recycling Law
New Jersey's new Electronic Waste Management Act went into effect on January 1 requiring TVs, computers and monitors and other items known as e-waste to be recycled. The new law means residents can no longer put these devices out on the curb for pickup with regular solid waste.
