10 Ways to Go Green at Work |
|
|
Here are some easy green office tips that
can help save energy, money and resources!
- Let There Be Sustainable Light: The
rule of thumb is that if you're going to
be out of a room for 15 minutes or more,
you’ll save energy (and money) by turning
out the lights.
- The Paper Trail: The average US office
worker goes through 10,000 sheets of copy
paper a year. Set your printer to print
on both sides of the paper. (A “how to”
was sent from Paul Niedbala in an email
on 4.19.10.) Imagine how much paper we could
save! Note: To avoid printing everything,
you can click on Zoom (in View section)
to increase the size of the text on your
screen making it easier to read.
- What’s Good for the GOOS: Don’t just
recycle paper, collect GOOS (Good On One
Side) paper for reuse—another way to use
both sides!
- Monitor Your Monitor: Turn off your
monitor if you aren’t going to use your
PC (personal computer) for more than 20
minutes. Though there is a small surge in
energy when a computer starts up, this amount
is still less than the energy used when
a computer is running for long periods of
time. Turn off both your CPU (central processing
unit-computer) and the monitor if you're
not going to use your PC for more than 2
hours.
- Don’t Be a Sucker: Vampires or wall
warts—those blocky power adapters for cell phones, PDAs
and other devices actually waste more power
than they produce, and account for 6% of
the national electric bill. And yes, they
still suck power when they are plugged into
the wall and not charging anything. To
save power, unplug them when they aren't
being used, or look for Energy Star branded
chargers.
- Stripped Down: Turn off the switch on
the power strip/surge protector to prevent
your devices from drawing power even when
they’re shut off. If you don't use a power
strip, unplug extra equipment when not in
use.
- Waste-Not, Want-Not: Keep reusable dishes,
flatware, beverage containers/commuter mugs
and a cloth napkin at the office for meals.
- Plastic, Not So Fantastic: The US consumes
50 billion plastic bottles each year. It
takes 17 million barrels of oil to produce
these bottles.
- Don’t Get Caught Holding the Bag: Whether
you’re picking up lunch or doing some errands,
“just say no” to a bag or use a reusable
one instead. About 500 billion to 1 trillion
plastic bags are used worldwide every year.
- Spring Cleaning: Learn about eCycling
and why it’s important to reuse and recycle
electronics and what the options are for
doing this safely in your area.
